Why the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive decision

← Back to Blog

There is a reason experienced teams rarely describe themselves as the cheapest.

In commercial solar, the lowest upfront cost per kW often turns out to be the most expensive decision over time. Cost per kW only tells a small part of the story.

Corners that are often cut at the lower end

  • String layouts that quietly limit output
  • Inverters sized for today, with no allowance for growth
  • Panels packed too tightly, inviting shading losses
  • No provision for safe access and future maintenance
  • Limited monitoring, so underperformance goes unseen
  • Lower-grade cabling that increases long-term risk

None of these show up on commissioning day. All of them show up in year eight.

Built for the next thirty years, not for handover

Good systems are not built for commissioning day. They are built for the next twenty to thirty years.

When lifetime value overtakes upfront price, solar stops being a cost and becomes part of a planned profit-and-loss strategy rather than just an energy project. That is when it starts to behave like a serious business asset.

If a quote is materially cheaper than the others, the useful question is not "why are they cheaper" but "what has been left out, and when will I find out".

We are happy to walk through a design comparison against any other proposal you are holding, line by line. It usually takes about twenty minutes and it is often the most useful twenty minutes of the process.
